Coach Bio

Hello, my name is Harry. I am a dermatology resident doctor at the University of British Columbia. I received my Bachelor of Science degree at McGill University, and I completed my medical school at the University of Alberta. You can follow me on Instagram or Twitter (@harryliumd) to learn more about my journey.

When applying to medical school, I had friends and peers who supported me tremendously throughout the process. I simply want to pay it forward to help make the process less stressful for you. I developed systematic approaches to different types of interview questions and hope to help you discover your strengths as well as your own style. I also was the interviewer for three admission cycles, so I would be able to provide you with individualized advice. I believe that sets me apart is that I went through over 20 MMI and panel interviews across the country for the Canadian residency matching process. I not only gained new perspectives of how to effectively communicate what you are capable of in an interview, but also appreciated the importance of being authentic.

In the past years, I helped many students get in many different medical schools (including University of British Columbia, University of Alberta, University of Calgary, McGill University, University of Toronto, Queen’s University, Western University, University of Ottawa, McMaster University, University of Manitoba, University of Saskatchewan, and George Washington University), University of Alberta dental school, University of Calgary veterinary school, University of British Columbia pharmacy school, and the University of Alberta physiotherapy program. I also helped International Medical Graduates (IMGs) from Iran, Cameroon, and Sudan match to their desired residency programs in Canada.

My goal for you is to make you feel ready and confident and show the best version of yourself during the interview day. I am looking forward to meeting with you!

I had a coaching session with Harry that I found very helpful! I am fairly early on in the process of preparing for MMIs, so he was able to give me lots of advice on how to prepare and what to expect. We also did some practice where Harry helped me understand what I need to improve and provided helpful feedback to guide me in the right direction.

Update from May 2020: I’m thrilled to have been accepted to a couple of medical schools and will be attending UBC this fall! I had two sessions with Harry leading up to my interviews. His coaching really helped me give organized and well thought out answers to MMI prompts, while staying genuine. I also tried a coaching session with one of the bigger companies, as they offered me a promotional session at half price (which was still far more expensive than MedCoach). I found that Harry’s advice was much more helpful and the feedback he provided was well tailored to my specific strengths and weaknesses. Overall, I would strongly recommend Harry for interview prep!

I contacted him for MMI advice, and he was able to pack our 1-hour session with a lot of information and advice on the interview process and preparation. I had to change our meeting time last minute, and Harry was very understanding and rescheduled a new time with me immediately. 2021 Update:
I was worried about this past application cycle because the pandemic meant that my written application remained largely the same… So I prepared for my interview more thoroughly with one of the best preparation resources I knew from my previous MMI, which were coaching sessions with Harry.
Harry’s coaching is all of the above and he identified my individual strengths and weaknesses, providing bespoke advice and actionable plans to help drastically improve my responses. I am glad to have spent much more time with Harry this year and I am absolutely certain he had a huge role in my acceptance to UBC Med this year. I would rate 6 stars if I could 😉

Thank you again and I wish future applicants all the best!

I had four MMI prep coaching sessions with Harry and found all of them to be really helpful! He provided me with a much clearer understanding of how to approach the various MMI stations, and also gave me a lot of opportunities to practice a wide variety of scenarios, while offering immediate feedback for each question I answered. His feedback was always clear and constructive and really pushed me to think more deeply about each situation. Each session was also very well organized and maximized the time for learning/practice.
Additionally, I personally struggle with performance anxiety in the MMI-type setting but I found the practice opportunities and Harry’s supportive and encouraging approach were really great for helping me work on overcoming that. For our final session he set up a mini mock-MMI which was also incredibly useful for preparation.
Altogether I found Harry to be an excellent coach, and I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to improve their interview skills!

Nothing but excellent things to say about Harry! I interviewed last year at UBC and was waitlisted and subsequently rejected with a “below average” MMI score, so I knew that the MMI was my biggest area of improvement. Harry has a keen understanding of the MMI process and really wants to help you succeed. During our sessions together, Harry gave me great advice and we covered lots of relevant practice questions. Harry always gave me clear, thoughtful, and constructive feedback, and helped me consider perspectives that I hadn’t even thought of. Thanks to Harry, I felt a lot more confident and prepared going into this year’s interview. Harry was also flexible with scheduling our sessions, which I really appreciated. Prior to the MMI, I also had a great session with Harry to prepare for the CASPER test, and I would highly recommend him for this as well.

I am proud to say that after four application cycles, I have received an offer of admission to medical school at UBC, and I know that Harry’s coaching played a big role in my success. This really is a dream come true. Thank you for everything, Harry!!!

Harry is a phenomenal coach. His sessions consisted of structured MMI sessions where he went through thorough detail on the different types of questions and sample structures for answers, and sessions where we went through sample questions simulating an MMI. Harry is incredibly knowledgeable; I have learned lot about the medical field through talking to him. He provides fantastic feedback and is very flexible/accommodating in terms of scheduling. Harry has also helped significantly decrease my nervousnessness and helped boost my self-confidence and hope leading up to my interviews, which I believe was pivotal to my success. Because of his help, I was accepted to Ottawa and waitlisted at UBC! This was my first cycle with interviews (after 2 successful cycles without interviews) and I am so overjoyed and grateful that I invested in coaching sessions with Harry! Thank you sincerely, Harry for helping to make my dream of becoming a physician come true!!!!

After being invited to interviews for the first time ever this past year, I wanted to prepare as best as I could because I didn’t want to fumble the opportunity… being coached by Harry ensured I was interview-ready. Harry teaches you the in’s and out’s of interviews and has you practice as if you are really in one while also providing insightful feedback. I’m happy to share that with Harry’s help I was accepted to UBC and Queen’s, and waitlisted at Western. You won’t go wrong by preparing for interviews with Harry!

  50. Cierra says:

Harry is a huge reason for why I made it into medical school (UofC and waitlist for UofA). He is incredibly patient, encouraging, and thoughtful when providing advice, because he understands how nervous some applicants are. Harry is also very objective with giving feedback, so you know that you are receiving valuable critique that will be very similar to how admissions teams evaluate their applicants. He is so knowledgeable and gave me a lot of tangible advice that was very easy to apply – this really bumped up my interview game. By the time interviews came around, I felt calm and confident because I knew that Harry prepared me well. If you are someone who feels uncomfortable with practicing for interviews (even with friends/other applicants), I highly suggest getting a coach like Harry. I can’t thank him enough for making this dream possible!
