My name is Nolan. I am a first year medical student at the University of British Columbia (UBC). I completed my undergraduate degree at UBC in Integrated Sciences, a multidisciplinary degree where I focused on Physiology, Immunology, and Biochemistry. I completed my degree in 2017 and had a year off before being accepted to medical school. In my year off I was involved Neurology Clinical Research at BC Children’s Hospital and once I was accepted I took off to travel Europe before medical school started.
My passion for mentoring and teaching developed in the last couple years of university where I was involved in mentoring many indigenous secondary and post-secondary students on how to get involved in research and apply for grants. I rarely turn down an opportunity to help out someone achieve their goals. When I was first year of university I had another third year pre-medical school student take hours out of his schedule to help me take on the enduring journey to medical school. I felt very grateful and appreciative. Much like my mentor, I have a goal of providing help to other students, who were once in my shoes, to help them reach their goal of being accepted to medical school.
Outside of my academic life, I keep up with my love for hockey by playing in a recreational league at UBC. I enjoy anything that gets me on my feet and activity, whether it is going to the gym, playing spike ball, or getting up to the beautiful BC mountains to snowboard.
